How to stop airtime leakage when you reward customers

Rewarding shoppers or staff with airtime is simple, and people value it. The hard part is control. When rewards run through cash, scratch cards or a manager’s phone, head office cannot see where the money went.

Where the leakage happens

The same gaps appear in most businesses:

  • Budgets handed out in cash with no record of who received what.
  • Recharge cards kept in a drawer and used by staff.
  • Rewards sent from a personal phone with no receipt.
  • No way to take back unused budget from a branch.

Give every level its own wallet

Head office funds one wallet and shares it out to branch managers, who share it with their staff. Nobody can spend more than they are given, and unused balance can be pulled back at any time.

Record every reward

Each reward should carry a reference, the phone number, the amount and the person who sent it. When a top-up fails at the network, the amount should go straight back to the sender’s wallet.

Review it like any other spend

Export rewards by branch and staff member each month, compare them with sales, and switch off accounts for staff who leave. A reward programme with these controls is one finance can approve and grow.
